Wines
Compelling, delicious wines go beyond fruitiness; they are complicated and sometimes corrupt in their composition, with broad and deep sensory impacts that ultimately finish in a process of enjoyment and contemplation.
Patience affirms the many avenues available to a winemaker. We approach winemaking with a gentle hand, allowing the grape and vintage to express themselves over the course of the aging process. Timing is key; knowing when and how to gently intervene in this natural process.
Currently X NOVO makes two estate wines from the X Omni Vineyard. Both wines are limited in quantity and offered to our mailing list members in the spring and fall.
Two noble varieties and our initial library of vintages to share in good company.
Pinot Noir
Chardonnay
X NOVO Chardonnay 2021
TASTING NOTE
Our 2021 X Omni Vineyard Estate Chardonnay features an expressive, mineral-driven nose of lemongrass, citrus rind, orchard fruits and a discreet presence of warm spices. The cleansing and bright palate leads with kiwi, lime, and pear before giving way to a richer, savory finish with echoes of brioche. There is a lovely interplay between the depth of flavor and the lively acidity which makes this wine pleasing and compelling.
WINEMAKING
The 2021 X Omni Chardonnay was raised in 50% new and 50% neutral French oak barrels for 18 months and was bottled in April of 2021.
2021 GROWING SEASON
A mild and dry winter followed by a cool spring and one of the driest growing seasons on record. A cold period in mid-May and a wet first week of June mildly impacted flowering resulting in some reduction in crop.
There was a significant heat event at the end of June with temperatures over 110 degrees for three days. Fortunately, the recently formed small, green berries experienced no damage from the extreme heat. The growing season remained warm and unusually dry, which significantly reduced disease pressure throughout the remainder of summer.
Fearful this growing season would deliver an uneven, premature harvest, the beginning of September ushered in near-perfect weather with a return to mild daily temperatures and cooler nights: a classic harvest situation with steady, non-stressful ripening.
Harvest casually began the second week of September. We were rewarded with vibrantly ripe fruit containing naturally high acids with a core of minerality and intensity. A vintage to remind us to never judge too quickly.
(or, things can and often change for the better; a reminder of the resilience of vines?)

X NOVO Chardonnay 2022
TASTING NOTE
Our 2022 X Omni Chardonnay slowly opens to fragrance of citrus zest, ginger, almond and orchard fruits. Medium-weight and elegant, the flavors follow with lemon curd, toasted hazelnut and spice. A slight savory profile is accompanied by a solid core of fruit along with lively acidity. There is a sustained energy and concentration throughout followed by the signature chalky impression of the X Omni vineyard. This is an age-worthy vintage that will unfold slowly, rewarding cellaring and improving with bottle age.
WINEMAKING
Nurtured in 70% new French oak and 30% neutral French oak barrels for 18 months and was bottled in April of 2024. This wine was bottled unfiltered and may therefore develop a natural sediment.
2022 GROWING SEASON
The 2022 growing season was characterized by unique challenges and ultimately favorable conditions, resulting in a successful harvest. The season began, following a mild winter, in March with budbreak, suggesting we would see an early harvest. However, on April 14th, a severe frost event - described as a one-in-50-year occurrence - dropped temperatures to the mid to low 20's, affecting emerging shoots, setting vine development back 2-4 weeks. Depending on the air flow within the vineyard some blocks were less affected. Nonetheless, this frost event set the stage for a heterogenous crop owing to secondary shoots pushing to replace the primary shoots lost.
April, May and early June were cool and wet, further delaying the season. Flowering occurred in late June almost 4 weeks later than usual with a healthy crop. Luckily, the tenuous season, improved considerably as warm, hot weather took control for the balance of the growing season into September and early October. It's worth noting that 2022 was the third warmest year ever behind 2014 and 2015. This key factor contributed decisively to the vintage's success.
Harvest began the first week in October as we anxiously kept an eye out for rain. The ample crop was clean with higher than usual acid levels and varying maturity owing to primary and secondary shoots. We concluded harvesting by the 16th as impending rains were arriving soon. Fermentations proceeded unfailingly to completion by the end of November. This was followed by long, measured cellaring, with admittedly seems rather simple, but is nonetheless an essential procedure that allows the wine to develop its true, coherent character.
Despite the challenges and subsequent reporting, the 2022 vintage produced pure, lively wines built on a footing of solid fruit. These will be enduring wines.

X NOVO Pinot Noir 2021
TASTING NOTE
The 2021 growing season with its cooler than average weather in August and September presented us with clean fruit exhibiting both sweet and savory components exemplary of Pinot Noir. Fruits of black cherry, strawberry, and blood orange combine with violet and savory spice box fragrances. Echoes of those aromas layer across the palate, framed by an excellent balance and unpretentious extraction. The wine possesses a graceful weight and length with fine-grained tannins.
WINEMAKING
The 2021 X Omni Pinot Noir was raised in 60% new and 40% neutral French oak barrels for 18 months and was bottled in April of 2023.

X NOVO Pinot Noir 2022
TASTING NOTE
Our Pinot Noir progresses gradually, once opened, as would be expected from a vintage with such a delayed growing season and harvest. The carmine red hue presents aromas of cherries, roses, raspberries with savory notes of cardamom and black licorice. The flavors suggest red fruits, huckleberry, blood orange and black tea; bright acidity, a signature of this year, is an attractive partner to the silky texture, maintaining a freshness across the entire finish.
WINEMAKING
Our 2022 X Omni Pinot Noir was cellared in 60% new and 40% neutral French oak barrels for 18 months. The wine was bottled unfined and unfiltered April 2024.

Reviews & Scores for X NOVO Chardonnay 2021
94 Points The Wine Advocate - Erin Brooks
Matured for 18 months in 50% new French oak, the 2021 Chardonnay X Omni Vineyard has detailed aromas of quince, white peach, spring honey, cereal and almonds. The medium-bodied palate is concentrated without weight, its pure, floral flavors delivered in a cloud-like, silky texture. It's balanced by bright acidity and has a long, elegant finish. 2,760 bottles were produced.

96 Points Decanter - Clive Pursehouse
We're not in a rush and don't bottle everything, says Craig, We have very high expectations, 60-70% new French oak with complete malolactic fermentation. It shows subtly on the aromatics, with notes of sweet vanilla and a touch of lemon drop candy. The fruit is soaring with a wildly balanced note of toasted almond and hazelnuts, there's an electric undercurrent that buoys a ripe fruit density, it's not dense, it's balanced, but undoubtedly ripe pineapple and mango. The finish is zesty and mineral with sterling salinity.

93 Points Vinous - Eric Guido
The 2021 Chardonnay X Omni Vineyard is wonderfully vibrant, showing freshly sliced green apple and nectarine with lemon oil and the slightest whiff of confectionary spice. It opens with a pretty inner sweetness, contrasted by zesty acidity and sour citrus as ripe orchard fruits cascade throughout. This leaves a citrusy concentration, tapering off long and full of tension, gently tannic and with hints of almond custard. There's a lovely integration of the 50% new oak here. I love the balance of richness and tautness.

The 2021 Chardonnay X Omni Vineyard is a pale yellow/straw hue and is ripe with notes of melon, wet stone, lemon sherbet, and fresh linen. In the cellar, it saw 18 months in 50% new French oak. The palate has a good amount of intensity and a light touch of sweet, white peachy fruit. It's an approachable white, with bright acidity shining on the finish, along with a savory, bitter lime pith note. Drink 2025-2032. The fruit for this wine was picked a month earlier than it was for the 2022. 230 cases were produced.

96 Points James Suckling - Courtney Humiston
Lemons, limes and touches of white peaches and sweet-spicy ginger on the nose. The palate is very bright, salty, chalky and savory, with flavors of sage and white mushrooms. Textural layers balance depth with precision. There is a clean sense of purity and energy to this medium-bodied wine. It offers much to explore in years to come. Drink or hold.

97 Points Northwest Wine Report - Sean Sullivan
It is exceedingly rare to see Chardonnay with this combination of intensity, texture, liveliness, and balance. The wine was raised 18 months in French oak (50% new). The aromas are intoxicating, with notes of struck flint, wet stone, citrus, orchard fruit, and a whiff of butterscotch. The palate has profound depth, intensity, textural richness, and, above all, balance. Truly vibrant, mouthwatering acidity gives the wine energy and propels it forward. An incredibly lengthy, persistent, just-will-not-quit, mouthwatering finish caps it off, flecked with toasty accents. It's nothing short of an accomplishment for this producer, appellation, and region. Best from 2026 to 2033.

97 Points Paul Gregutt's Wine Guide - Paul Gregutt
This is the third Chardonnay release from Craig Williams, whose X Novo and X Omni vineyards have quickly attracted a near-cult following among Oregon winemakers. It's a sexy, sultry wine, mouth-coating and viscous. The rich, exuberant palate is loaded with apricot and peach, pear and papaya, caramel and toasted hazelnuts. Half the barrels were new, half neutral. As with all of the Eola-Amity Chardonnays the acids are superb, and keep the finish lively and refreshed. This is a spectacular effort from start to finish, with aging potential over the moon.

95 Points The Wine Advocate - Erin Brooks
The 2022 Chardonnay X Omni Vineyard was matured for 18 months in 70% new French oak. It explodes from the glass with singular scents of quince, apricot, white tea, meringue and roasted almonds. The medium-bodied palate is polished and satiny, offering complex layers of fruit, honey and saline. Vibrant acidity adds compelling tension, and it has a very long finish. It will be long lived in the cellar. 4,020 bottles were made.

94 Points Decanter - Clive Pursehouse
Saline and mineral with soaring notes of chipped flint, smoky grilled lemon wedge, wild whiteflowers, and it's thirst slaking in it's acidity. The fruit in the 2022 vintage ranged from over to slightly underripe and it shows a gleaming edge of mineral salinity.

94 Points Vinous - Eric Guido
The 2022 Chardonnay X Omni Vineyard opens with a bouquet of wildflowers, a basket of freshly picked orchard fruit and a hint of lemon oil. The palate is soothingly round, with a strong mineral component and vividly ripe green apple, all energized by a bolt of juicy acidity. It tapers off long and nearly crunchy in feel, with nuances of apricot and tropical citrus that linger for up to a minute. The 70% new oak is beautifully integrated, adding texture while allowing the 2022's pure fruit to shine.

94 Points Jeb Dunnuck - Audrey Frick
A bright yellow color, the 2022 Chardonnay X Omni Vineyard is from the first vintage produced after Jamie Lewis left Antica Terra and joined the team. In the glass, this vintage has a more refined feel and a touch more rounded texture compared to the 2021. It concludes with sweeter citrus notes instead of bitterness. In the glass, it shows notes of toast, fresh pear, refreshing lime and lemon, and white flowers. It's full-bodied, though it stays light on its feet and has a graceful feel, with a bit of toasty oak incense lasting on the long finish. Drink 2025-2035. 355 cases produced.
August 26, 2025
96 Points James Suckling - Courtney Humiston
An energetic and nervy medium-bodied wine with incredible length. Delicate aromas of orchard fruit, citrus zest, wet stones, jasmine and fresh ginger. A steely core of acidity framed with pears, citrus, chalk and hints of spices and nuts from the oak. This wine is built for aging but is really pretty and wonderful right now.
July 31, 2025
95 Points Northwest Wine Report - Sean Sullivan
As with its 2021 vintage counterpart, this is a profound bottle of Chardonnay. Aged 18 months in French oak (70% new), the aromas offer notes of toasty spices, stuck flint, wet stone, lemon curd, cardamom, and ginger, with an aroma profile that, blind tasting, might make one think of Burgundy. The palate is on the lighter side of medium-bodied, texturally rich with vibrant, lemony acidity. The balance is exceptional and the length outrageous. Decant.

96 Points Paul Gregutt's Wine Guide - Paul Gregutt
The lovely aromatics pull you into an expressive and detailed wine with a head-spinning mix of citrus zest, bee pollen and wet stones. The palate is mineral-driven, laced with more citrus rind and flesh, white pepper, crisp apple, white peach and zesty radish. The acids are proportionate and supportive. The differences between the 2021 and 2022 vintages are perfectly reflected in these two wines, which offer a window on the vineyard, the region and the conditions that made the two years completely different. This wine saw 70% new oak, and finishes with a resonantly toasty frame.

The 2021 Pinot Noir X Omni Vineyard is the inaugural release of estate-grown Pinot Noir from X Omni. Matured for 18 months in 60% new French oak, it's brimming with scents of pomegranate, wild berry pie, blood orange, forest floor and lichen. The medium-bodied palate features layer after layer of bright, spicy fruit. It's framed by super silky tannins and bright, mouthwatering acidity, and it has a very long, layered finish. 1,548 bottles produced.

92 Points Vinous - Eric Guido
The 2021 Pinot Noir X Omni Vineyard is wild, lifting from the glass like a basket of ripe berries, complemented by hints of cola, sweet spice and violet. This is juicy in character, with masses of ripe red and blue fruits that swirl throughout as vibrant acidity maintains fantastic energy. Sour citrus tones add lovely inner tension. An air of lavender lingers as the 2021 finishes long, gently tannic and staining, balancing a saturation of primary fruit.
May 2024
93 Points Jeb Dunnuck - Audrey Frick
The 2021 Pinot Noir X Omni Vineyard is from the first vintage X Novo released under their own label and is the only red released by the estate thus far. A bright red color in the glass, it takes on aromas of strawberries, savory herbs, raspberries, and dried earth, and on the palate, it's very charming and approachable, with medium-bodied richness. Its fruit lasts long and floats on the palate, with fine tannins and refreshing acidity on the finish. It's a highly appealing wine now and should hold up over the next 10-12 years.

94 Points James Suckling - Courtney Humiston
A very pretty, medium-bodied wine with aromas of spices, flowers, cola, red cherries and cinnamon. The palate is fresh, with flavors of anise, mint, raspberries, cranberries and orange zest. Fine, tight tannin, sinewy acidity and a long finish. Drink or hold.

97 Points Northwest Wine Report - Sean Sullivan
This wine has it all: aromatic complexity, flavor richness, breathtaking texture, exquisite balance, and absurd length. Aged in French oak (60% new), the aromas draw you into the glass, with notes of strawberry, dark cherry, mushroom, plum, dark spice, and black tea, showing appealing detail and sophistication. The palate is an explosion of medium-bodied fruit flavors, cascading in a series of shock waves. The acidity is lively and exceptionally well-integrated with the fruit. The balance is perfect. The alcohol is moderate. The finish appears endless. Keep a defibrillator close by. This wine is a heart stopper, at the extreme upper reaches of quality - one of the best examples of this variety I've had from the broader Willamette Valley or really from anywhere. Best after 2026.

The 2022 Pinot Noir X Omni Vineyard slowly evolves with an understated yet pretty blend of freshly cut roses, violet pastille, stone dust and crushed strawberries. Silken textures and radiant wild berry fruits sweep across the palate while a subtle twang of sour citrus adds lovely contrast. A hint of licorice resonates as the 2022 finishes with excellent length, lightly tannic and wonderfully fresh.

The second vintage of this cuvèe, the 2022 Pinot Noir X Omni Vineyard pours a bright medium red and opens with spicier, high-toned aromatics of cinnamon, ripe cranberries, pine, and stemmy rose. The palate is medium-bodied and spicy, with chalky tannins, light astringency, and lasting toasted spice on the finish. Drink 2026-2038.

On the nose earth, spices and black cherries. Wonderful deep and dense dark fruit on the palate, along with hints of pine duff and forest floor. Seamless tannins and mineral-driven length. Medium-bodied, compact and tense. It will be nice to watch this wine evolve in two years' time. Drink from 2027.

96 Points Northwest Wine Report - Sean Sullivan
The aromas are arresting, with notes of steeped black tea, forest floor, plum, spice, dark fruit, and a whiff of coffee, mixing fruit and savory. The palate is full of intensity, richness, and texture, all in a medium-bodied, moderate alcohol frame. Fresh, exceptionally well-integrated acidity ties it all together. The balance is knee-buckling, and the blood orange-filled finish just will not quit, sticking around as long as you care to follow it. It's a wine that is near impossible to put down, and when you do, it's only to pour another glass. Best after 2026.
